Can I use sunflower oil instead of peanut oil for this recipe?

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Potato-Latk鈥?/a> ?

Also, do I cook the potatoes before I shred them, or do them raw? I feel like they should be cooked but it doesn't say!Can I use sunflower oil instead of peanut oil for this recipe?
You can use sunflower oil. Peanut oil holds up to frying better but sunflower, canola, or vegetable will work just fine.

Do not cook the potatoes before you grate them. Grate them into cold water to prevent them from turning brown on you. It also gets out some of the starch.

You will use a lot of oil. It is like cooking eggplant they seem to suck up oil. But they are so gosh darn good!!!!!Can I use sunflower oil instead of peanut oil for this recipe?
The probable reason for using the peanut oil is that it has a much higher flash point before burning. So you can get foods crunchier and not have to worry so much about burning the oil. Different oils have different flash points and will yield different outcomes in cooking, especially if you are cooking something that needs a crisp outside.
Yes, you can use any kind of cooking oil. You can even use lard or bacon fat! Be aware that that will add calories and cholesterol, but is the old-fashioned way.

The potatoes start out raw; do not cook them before shredding, but do put them into cold water as you shred them, or they will turn an ugly gray color. It doesn't affect how they taste, just how they look. Take care to squeeze out the excess moisture as directed in the recipe.
yes sunflower oil and peanut oil have similar baking temperatures. you cannot use sesamy oil, or olive oil as substitutes from Sunflower/peanut oil. they will burn up at lower temperatures.

p.s. if you use olive oil for baking any nutricious contents will have burned away before it ends up on your plate. its a waste of olive oil.

oh, and dont cook the potatoes, they will cook while baking.
Do not cook the potatoes first. But I would use peanut oil, as the recipe suggest. The reason for this, every oil has it's own special flavor, light to robust. The combination of the potatoes and peanut oil is very yummy. If you want to test this information, do some potatoes in sunflower oil and some in peanut oil. Also, you will use less salt if you go with peanut oil. Enjoy
Some potato chip companies use sunflower oil to fry chips. you will do fine.

According to the link below, sunflower oil has the same smoke point as peanut oil.
No don't cook them. It will come out fine. And yes you can use any oil you want. Lots of times I use olive oil for baking. Sounds funny but doesn't taste any different; just healthier.
LATKES!!

No just shred the raw potatoes, that's why you squeeze out the excess moisture. Any vegetable oil will be fine, you just want one that will take fryin temps, so no olive oil.
Yes you can substitute oil.

Shred potatoes raw then go for it.

Good luck.
