I think linseed oil is the medium used in oils. I don't know if sunflower or other vegetable oils would work as well because it wouldn't dry on the canvas .
I would imagine it taking an absolute age to dry. And god knows how stable it is. The best way to know is to try it. Experimentation is allowed.
